Every Australian knows that summer makes for awkward driving. Your safety buckle becomes a branding iron and your car seats scald your bottom. That’s because, if left out in the open, internal car temperatures can soar above 40°C, which is hot enough to cook flesh! To help you keep your car cooler this summer, here are some tips from the team at Hoppy’s Carwash & Café.
Use a sun visor
Before leaving your car, place a sunshade or visor across your windscreen. This will reduce the amount of UV rays reflected into your car and keep temperatures cooler. For added protection, add another visor to your rear window too.
Use a dash cover
By placing a fitted cover across your dashboard, you can protect yourself from hot vinyl surfaces while reducing radiant heat (especially if your dash is black). Better yet, a dash cover will protect your dash from sun damage such as cracking or fading.
Invest in window tinting
Window tinting protects your car from harsh UV rays, while increasing your privacy. There are many different types of window tinting, so make sure you invest in a material that has a solar heat rejection percentage of 30% or more.
Become a shade seeker
By parking in the shade, you can reduce the internal temperature of your car by over 10 degrees. That’s a huge difference, especially if you are parking your car for long periods of time. It’s always worth walking a bit further in order to score a spot in the shade.
Cover your steering wheel
Putting your hands on a hot steering wheel is extremely unpleasant, and if you have places to be, you don’t have time to wait for it to cool down. To fix this, cover your steering wheel with a small towel or cloth to keep the surface temperature lower.
